Superintendent Update: County Case Counts

Dear Coos Bay Schools, Families and Community,

Our case counts in Coos County continue to trend upward for the past three weeks. We have gone from 43 new cases over a two week period, to 56, to 79 new cases over the past two weeks. This puts us at 124 cases per 100,000 residents in the county. While that number still keeps our schools in the green zone, allowing our in-person hybrid model to continue, the increasing numbers are concerning.

Coos Health and Wellness has attributed the increase to a new variant that has shown up in our county, as well as a relaxed attitude around public safety protocols. Regardless of the cause, the reality is that the case numbers are trending upward over the past three weeks.

In-person graduation at Susick Stadium is still on for June 12th. We will be watching those case numbers closely as we get near graduation and adjust the capacity allowed in the stadium according to our county risk level.

I want to encourage everyone to keep up the good fight and do all we can to keep our case numbers from continuing to rise. The finish line for the 2020-21 COVID school year is in sight.

Have a great long weekend and stay safe!
